>Steve in Philadelphia…

I finished reading your book 🙂

You definitely have talent as a writer, and I think you’re definitely onto something great in terms of revolutionizing the way people think about bipolar disorder & schizophrenia. Too many people have bought into psychiatry’s theology – which as you point out in your book has no real proof for its claims – and the spiritual themes of our episodes definitely leads me to believe that God is somehow involved.

You’re absolutely right that big pharma and psychiatry as a whole wouldn’t be interested in the possibility that bipolar disorder or schizophrenia is actually a spiritual emergency instead of a chemical imbalance. I’m shocked that none of the doctors or therapists that I’ve encountered have ever offered this alternative
explanation that is actually documented in the DSM as a spiritual emergency.

In terms of my own experience, I never really communicated to any of the doctors the profound spiritual nature of my episodes perhaps because they were so complex, exciting, and hard to explain. After reading your book, I realized that my own experiences were very sacred and fascinating. I had always regarded my episodes as fascinating, but I never realized they were sacred!

You have definitely become a high-tech shaman in your own right, and I hope you continue to touch those on the web who may be caught in the viscious grips of psychiatry. I’m not sure yet if all people diagnosed with bipolar or schizophrenia are having a spiritual emergency instead of a chemical imbalance, but I concede
that many of us are probably in fact dealing with only a spiritual problem – not a chemical imbalance.

I think it would be great for you to champion your ideas through the mental health system- confront it head on. There’s a lot of big mental health organizations like NAMI that would probably welcome you as an advocate, especially since spiritual emergency is documented in the DSM-IV and appears to be underdiagnosed.

Thank you for sending me your book, Sean 🙂
It means a lot to me 🙂 I will recommend your book to everyone I know in the mental health system in return for your generosity.
